DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

The Department of Public Health (DPH) works in partnership to promote and improve health, wellness, safety and quality of life in San Bernardino County. DPH works with its partners to prevent disease and protect our communities, respond to emerging public health issues, promote healthy behaviors and access to healthier choices, and deliver equitable, high quality health services.

Accomplishments:

  • In support of the Countywide Vision2BActive campaign, co-hosted “Home Run for Health” Public Health Night at San Manuel Stadium, with a sold-out stadium of 6,887 attendees.
  • The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) granted accreditation status to DPH, making the department the 14th out of 61 local health departments in California that has achieved accreditation thus far.
  • Won eight 2019 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards for various programs in the department. This is the most NACo awards received in any department in the county.
  • The DPH Workforce Development Plan 2019/2021 was updated and brought forth the analysis of a workforce assessment, the official launch of the Mentoring Program with 22 total participants, completion of 52 Stay Interviews to support workforce retention efforts and the revision and promotion of the Individual Development Plan (IDP) to encourage staff p rofessional growth.
  • HealthStat, the department’s open performance dashboard was updated to include eight performance categories to track targets set by the DPH Strategic Plan, Workforce Development Plan, Quality Improvement Plan and other targets established by DPH programs.

Goals:

  • Continue to expand the use of HealthStat with additional program-specific dashboards to develop a culture of data-driven decision-making.
  • Implement a department-wide customer satisfaction survey to standardize the process to collect, analyze and respond to consumer feedback.
  • Increase the use of Plan, Do, Study, Act cycles across department staff to promote a culture of quality improvement.
