Family Group Decision Making (FGDM)

IS A Pilot PROGRAM CURRENTLY BEING UTILIZED BY

San Bernardino County Dept. of Children and Family Services

Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) is a strength-based, family-focused intervention process mediated by a facilitator. The FGDM meeting is designed to strengthen the natural care-giving system for the children. Invitees to a FGDM meeting may include family members, family identified support persons, CFS caseworkers and other service providers. These participants assist the family in creating and following through on a plan that provides for the safety, attachment and permanency needs of the children.

The practice principals for the FGDM Program are:

  • Safety of the child and participants is of paramount concern.

  • A successful conference is one where the family is empowered to make safe and appropriate decisions regarding the safety, permanency and well being of their children, AND these decisions are acceptable to the professionals involved with the case.

  • The Family Group Decision Making Conference must be voluntary.

  • The real and perceived neutrality and impartiality of the facilitator is key for a successful conference.

  • The family should be given all of the necessary information and time to make informed and well reasoned decisions for their children.
