PRESCHOOL EARLY INTERVENTION (PEI)
The Preschool Early Intervention (PEI) program provides teachers and parents with strategies and
activities to help them identify social, emotional and behavioral issues in children in order to prevent the
onset of more severe behavioral conditions. The program also provides referrals to families in need of
additional support services and resources such as:
Appropriate mental health providers
Support groups for parents and caretakers
Primary care providers
PSD compiles and analyzes all service area data, demographics, and resources in order to determine how to
provide the most useful and appropriate services to the largest number of eligible children and families.
This process allows PSD to maximize the use of HS and EHS funds.

First 5 supports high quality and developmentally appropriate early education programs for children in
San Bernardino County. These programs are designed to provide high quality early education programs
to improve a child’s cognitive, social and emotional development so that they are better prepared for
success in school and life. These programs are also meant to expand the availability of programs to
children who were unable to receive services either through income limits or lack of available slots.
