Health Insurance - Medical Support FAQs

Does the parent paying child support have to provide health insurance?
Yes. Health insurance coverage, or medical support, must be included in any child support order. Even if it is not available immediately, the court will order the parent paying child support to provide insurance when it becomes available at no cost or at reasonable cost. This medical support provision applies to all cases.

Do I have to provide health insurance if my child receives Medi-Cal or Healthy Families?
If health insurance is not available through your employer at a reasonable cost, these state plans meet the requirement for medical support.
