Child Support Amount FAQs

How is the amount of child support calculated?
Each parent is expected to pay for the support of the child(ren) according to his/her ability. To determine the proper child support amount, the court uses a mathematical formula which is based on a statewide guideline. The most important components of the formula are the number of children involved, the parents’ incomes, and the amount of time each parent spends with the child (also known as “timeshare”).

Are expenses considered when calculating child support?
Some expenses are considered when calculating child support, including the following:
  • Taxes
  • Mandatory union dues and retirement contributions
  • Health insurance
  • Child and spousal support already being paid

  •  My ex-spouse has remarried and has another family to support. How does this affect the support owed to our children?
The amount of the child support order may be decreased if the other parent also must support children from another relationship.
